Deputy provincial police commissioner Maj-Gen Fred Kekana informed the media that the attack was “unprovoked,” emphasizing the senselessness of the incident. “The poor patrons were just enjoying themselves when people came and shot,” he told broadcaster Newzroom Afrika. Many residents echoed his shock, with one local remarking: “These guns, they sound each and every evening… as soon as it’s dusk we know that gunshots are about to sound and they will sound severely. It is terrorising our communities.”
The violence and fear have left the community in a state of unrest. Deputy mayor Nontombi Molatlhegi appealed for increased security, stating that locals were too terrified to help police identify suspects. She highlighted the urgent need for national government intervention, advocating for military assistance to restore peace and safety in Bekkersdal.
