The Libyan army chief, Gen Mohammed Ali Ahmed al-Haddad, has tragically died following an air crash in Turkey, according to Libya’s prime minister.
Gen al-Haddad, along with four other individuals, was traveling on a Falcon 50 aircraft departing from Ankara, the capital of Turkey. Just 42 minutes after takeoff, at 20:52 local time (17:52 GMT), all communication with the business jet was lost, as confirmed by Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
The aircraft, which was headed toward Tripoli, had issued an emergency landing request before contact was lost, indicating possible technical difficulties or an in-flight emergency.
Libya’s internationally-recognized Prime Minister, Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, expressed his sorrow and confirmed receiving the news of Gen al-Haddad’s passing. The prime minister also stated that other high-ranking Libyan military officials were among those on board.
Gen Haddad and his delegation traveled to Turkey to participate in talks focused on enhancing military and security cooperation between the two nations. These bilateral relations have been a subject of ongoing discussions, aiming at stability and strategic collaboration.
