The latest Miami peace talks involving the United States, Ukraine, and Russia aimed to find a diplomatic solution for the ongoing war. While envoys described the meetings as “productive and constructive,” significant progress toward an end to the conflict remains elusive.
US President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and Ukraine’s chief negotiator, Rustem Umerov, released a joint statement after three days of talks attended by European officials. According to both envoys, the meetings concentrated on common ground regarding a 20-point plan, a multilateral security guarantee framework, a US-specific security guarantee for Ukraine, and an economic and prosperity plan for Ukraine.
Meanwhile, separate meetings were held between US officials and Russia’s envoy, Kirill Dmitriev. Witkoff stressed that all parties shared the goal of “stopping the killing, ensuring guaranteed security, and creating conditions for Ukraine’s recovery, stability, and long-term prosperity.”
The diplomatic surge follows the leak of a 28-point US peace plan last month, which generated concern among Ukraine and its European allies for seemingly favoring Russia. Since then, renewed American efforts have sought to allay such fears and seek common ground, despite ongoing Russian aggression in Ukraine.
Despite the “productive and constructive” tone, neither the US nor Ukrainian envoys signaled a forthcoming deal. Russia’s Kirill Dmitriev is expected to brief President Vladimir Putin on the discussions in Moscow. Suggestions of a potential three-way summit involving the US, Russia, and Ukraine were quickly dismissed by Kremlin officials.
The main roadblocks to peace remain, particularly Moscow’s demands for formal control over certain Donbas regions, and US intelligence continues to warn of President Putin’s broader ambitions beyond Ukraine. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov rejected claims of Russia seeking to reclaim old Soviet territories, saying, “This absolutely does not correspond to reality.”
President Putin told the BBC that Russia would avoid further wars if treated with “respect,” but recent military activity tells a different story. Russia has escalated attacks on Ukraine’s southern Odesa region, targeting port and energy infrastructure. Ukrainian officials report that these strikes are intended to restrict Ukrainian access to the Black Sea and disrupt vital logistics to the Moldovan border.
On the other side, Ukrainian drone operations recently damaged infrastructure and vessels in Russia’s Krasnodar region. Russian officials reported large fires but confirmed safe evacuation of all crews. Some reports suggest that oil facilities were targeted in the attack.
The Miami peace talks underscore ongoing international efforts to broker peace between Russia and Ukraine.
